The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority announced a $20 million grant from an infrastructure bill signed by the president last year that will used to help fund a new bridge across the Potomac just for bikers and pedestrians. The total cost is $88 million and the rest will be funded by state and local tax money.

The new pedestrian/bike bridge is part of a larger project in which a new railroad bridge will be built next to the century plus old Long Bridge, which goes between Arlington and DC. In addition, the new pedestrian/bike bridge will also be built.

The new railroad bridge is expected to open around 2030, and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority expects the pedestrian/bike bridge to open either in 2030 or earlier.

Speculation: The new railroad bridge will tie some evacuation "minibridge" points to the new pedestrian bridge as a cheap safety feature.

The flyover rendering video of the new bridges shows no emergency escape routes.

A flyover animation is not the final design that gets built. The final design is produced when the "as built" drawings are issued. Here's a reminder of how a building is actually built from scratch, according to an actual engineer (Where There's Your Problem Podcast Ep 4, mind the background banter).

I will not be surprised of these get added "in the last minute."

I will not be surprised if they don't get added as they are totally unnecessary.

Not to mention a safety or security risk. Put a minibridge out there and someone will find a way onto the tracks.....
