16 People Are Injured, Including 10 Shot, in Attack on Brooklyn Subway
Five of the victims were in critical condition after a man in a worker’s vest put on a gas mask, opened a canister that filled a subway car with smoke, and then opened fire, the police said.

I'm not sure which line this was on as it is not in the article

EDIT: Now appears that reason for R train video was a few injured persons got on the R train.
It happened in car 5551, which is an R46 and operating on the N. The reason an R train was shown in some of the news reports is because many of the people on the N ran across the platform to an R train of R160s and took it to the next stop - 25th St and then ran up to the street.

The link below is to the video shown on major TV news. You can see the smoke coming out of car 5551.

I heard about it and jumped on WPIX (https://pix11.com)'s live feed. It was a northbound N, and the R stayed a small bit to get folks evac'ed.

Some immediate take-aways are that the security cameras in 36th street were broken at the time -- only someone recording video got the aftermath when it stopped.

Yes. 6 of them were treated for smoke inhalation.

But good news! They caught the guy:

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Police arrested the suspected Brooklyn subway shooter Wednesday, the day after he allegedly opened fire on a train, shooting 10 people, officials said.

Frank R. James, 62, had been identified as a person of interest on Tuesday and then upgraded to a suspect in the case. He was captured in Manhattan. James faces up to life in prison if he’s convicted, prosecutors said. He’s being charged federally on a terrorism offense.

Misogynist and xenophobic social media posts.
I bet a history of domestic violence.
And was known to FBI.

OTOH, now I know who shops at Phantom Fireworks.

You should be a bit more specific on the cameras.

The 36th St station cameras were not working but the cameras at the Kings Highway station where James got on were working fine as those recorded him entering at the turnstiles.

In the Federal Court, the following standard will be applied to determine if the defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity: ""Every man is to be presumed to be sane, and to establish a defense on the ground of insanity, it must be clearly proved that, at the time of the committing of the act, the party accused was laboring under such a defect of reason, from disease of mind, and not to know the nature and quality of the act he was doing; or if he did know it, that he did not know he was doing what was wrong."

NPR reported a bit on the history of the shooter's social media. From the transcript (I listened to it yesterday):
JOUSEF: You know, James did post one item on Facebook from a neo-Nazi group called The Base, suggesting that maybe Black people could take lessons from how it organizes and trains. And some on social media seemed eager to brand him an extreme leftist or affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement, but that simply wasn't clear. He seemed to be for Black liberation, but he also discounted civil rights and social justice movements as a waste of time.

ESTRIN: OK - not a very consistent ideology.
So I think the defense calling for a mental evaluation was the right thing to do. As one famous Texan once said, "That boy ain't right."
