Green Line Extension Lechmere to Medford

In the good ol' days, the MTA would schedule opening day on a Saturday so that commuters wouldn't be squeezed by rail fans on opening day or give Monday-Friday rail fans a chance to see the new line.

The Monday opening may be a precaution in case an addition weekend closure is needed for the Government Center Garage demolition.

Recent rapid transit openings have been a mix of days. During the 1960s-1980s expansion period, openings were mostly Saturday for extensions, and Monday or Tuesday for reroutings that required weekend track work.

At NYCT, new stations and lines are in service on Sundays (since schedules are effective on Sunday - start of week).

Second Avenue/96 Street - 1/1/2017

I do know MBTA schedules (spring, summer, fall, winter) start on Saturdays, in March, June, September and
late December respectively.

The 2022 MassDOT state map is now online (March 2022 edition with file dated 3/3) and has the extension. A new MBTA system map is not yet online.

Well, today is the day! definitely going out to see the brand new Lechmere and Union Square stations!

A bunch of us from work are going out to see the festivities and have lunch in Union Square.

Can someone explain to me why Lechmere is a proof of payment station?

It is elevated put in the fare gates!

Maybe, just maybe they should be putting fare gates there instead of North Station.

I know I'm in the minority but I have no problem with fare gates at the commuter rail terminals.

With the caveat, of course, that the C branch has inexplicably been cut back from North Station to GC.

Light rail should not have faregates. IMO Berlin, Germany has a great system.

Sir I agree with you when you're on a street but when you have controlled access like having to take stairs or an elevator to an elevated platform add the gates.

Faregates are really expensive to build, operate, and maintain. It's so much cheaper and fits the mode better to have a Proof of Payment system.

POP requires severe penalties for non-compliance to deter simply not paying. The Massachusetts legislature has so far refused to entertain hefty penalties for fare evasion; so until that changes, POP will not be cheaper nor more efficient.
