Does anyone know when SIRT's 30 year old R-44(?) cars are slated for replacement? I haven't had a front window ride on SIRT since the last of the old cars circa 1972. If they were to re-equip with new R-160's maybe I could get a "new" head-end ride, since their cab door windows can be seen thru at least in daylight.

The SIR R44 will get replaced with the R179s in 2015.

The cars will be known as R211S. These cars will have cab signaling rather than CBTC which will be in R211A and RR211T mainline subway cars. There will be 75 of the R211S cars. Car numbers TBA.

A test train for SIR is scheduled for August 2022. If all goes well, then delivery will commence in latter 2023 into 2024.

The above is , of course, an estimate. Anything can happen when new car orders are involved

First new Staten Island Railway cars arrive in NYC: Here’s what riders can expect

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island Railway (SIR) riders will soon get their first chance to ride the new train cars coming to the borough’s lone line.

A representative from the MTA told the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com that five prototype R211S train cars recently arrived in New York City, with the agency set to begin non-passenger testing later this month.

By the end of the year, the prototype cars will be placed in a 30-day in-service test that will carry passengers, granting local commuters their first chance to check out the new train cars that will eventually populate the railway, the MTA said.

In 2018, the MTA approved the $1.75 billion purchase of 535 R211 train cars from Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., including 75 R211S cars set to replace the existing fleet of the SIR, which is nearing 50 years old.
