Ontario County ready to move on old roundhouse

The long-abandoned Manchester Lehigh Valley Railroad Roundhouse is in “remarkably good condition” and ideal for reuse, according to the consultant who presented findings on the structure Thursday night.

"remarkably good condition"? I guess you can buy a report that says what you want to hear if you pay the money. The roof has been falling down in chunks for years, various other pieces are severely compromised. The report even says the structure will need to be "stabilized" at a minimum.

Anything is possible, given enough time and (taxpayer) money. I'd love to see it restored, but it's going to be way more expensive and involved than anyone is willing to recognize.

I am probably mixing it up with some other old roundhouse in NY, but I seem to remember posts somewhere that it was being used for storage by some landscaping or similar company. Back 10 or 20 years ago. Jim S

EDIT: a 2007 thread of 3 pages about the condition of the same roundhouse and possibly saving it. I don't know if the rattle-can art was there then already or not.

Well look at that - 14 years later and not only is the roundhouse still standing, but its future looks considerably brighter today than it did then.

I still think throwing money at the place is a waste, but on the other hand I'd love to be proved wrong and see the dreams of restoration come true. Just maybe, that will happen. Stay tuned.....

I was thinking the same thing. Like most, I figured this place was doomed. I hope everything goes well and the roundhouse is resurrected - hopefully with a purpose for FGLK too.
