  • This forum will be for issues that don't belong specifically to one NYC area transit agency, but several. For instance, intra-MTA proposals or MTA-wide issues, which may involve both Metro-North Railroad (MNRR) and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Other intra-agency examples: through running such as the now discontinued MNRR-NJT Meadowlands special. Topics which only concern one operating agency should remain in their respective forums.

Haha it was a good parfait, but the crumb cake was the star for this breakfast. I've never tried Colombe's coffee but enjoyed it.

It looks like Aramark is the lounge's food vendor and caretaker according to the survey pamphlet on the table. I'm very impressed.

We took a quick trip down to Manhattan yesterday to attend the Macy's Flower Show. The Moynihan Train Hall is something that NYC has needed since the first day the "new" Penn Station went into service. Throughout the new space are photographs that pay tribute the the original station. The Baggage Claim room has a series of photos the show the original station from it's construction to it's demise. The ticketed passengers waiting room is for anyone holding Amtrak, or LIRR tickets (sorry NJT). Retail services are starting to fill in, ands there is a new Whole Foods a block to the west if your looking for good take out.

IMO MSG needs to go . It has served its purpose and NYC needs a class 1 station that compares to others around the world. Anyone know when the MSG lease ends ?. Also is there a escrow fund for demolition of MSG ?

No idea where it stands right now ... Bit after the latest billion dollar expenditure for this project and COVID it's probably going to be a while before we see the next major above ground improvement. The tunnel is clearly the priority now.

We don't need a Taj Mahal to commute through. We need escalators, redone platforms, elevators (not vertically mobile cesspools), reopening of the passage to 6th ave subway and PATH. IOTW, make the pits of PENN much easier to navigate. Put back affordable grab and go food that is easy to find and get. It does not need to reach to the sky. It does need to be comfortable, accessible, have fully working AC and heat and transit access. Make it great to commute through, not a tourist attraction.

Yep. There's a possibility New Yorkers will elect officials to confront the Dolans and their Teapot MSG deal, but so far the Trump-Cuomo axis is strong. Dolan's latest gambit is to (again?) threaten to raise ticket prices to see the Knicks. But more space for the Penn warren doesn't move trains.

Dolan owns the air rights to everything where MSG sits is my understanding so there is no "lease" so to say. Dolan has an operating certificate to host sporting events and entertainment events in the building. If the city revoked that for whatever reason Dolan would still own the physical structure of MSG.

The train hall is beautiful and more people are starting to use it, I'm excited to see the bar and restaurant options when they open in the coming months.

Here are some key data points for understanding the Penn Station / MSG situation:

1) The Dolans only own half the air rights.
2) The other half are owned by the Vornado Realty Trust, who'd stand to benefit in the billions if offices were to be built in/with the air rights, rather than MSG
3) MSG needs a permit to operate as a venue. The first 50-year permit ran 1963-2013 and was renewed til 2023. The Dolans want it in perpetuity, Advocates want it revoked.
4) Zoning requires that any redevelopment redevelop Penn Station.
Attached to the Garden is 5.4 million square feet of development rights—air rights that, per a provision in the zoning, are locked and unusable unless Penn Station is completely remade. But, according to numerous officials who have worked on the project, the way Penn Station is constructed makes it difficult to do any sort of major renovation of the dimly lit claustrophobic transit hub without first removing the Garden and then stripping down the entire station.
5) So the air rights' usefulness are double-limited: If MSG remains within the air rights, it needs a permit. If the air rights gets redeveloped, that requires renovating Penn Station.

Air rights aside... ouch. Rebuilding Penn Madison means killing access to NJT tracks... or worse, killing the station as a whole.

No wonders why they want to get NJT out of Penn Madison and into a separate station right next door...

In had inline links to most stories, and the zoning is cited above. Is there more I can supply?

...and Moynihan is a disaster already now that traffic is picking back up:

In this case, I think the pictures tell more than the story, and they quote from Twitter:

Another example of it has to look pretty at all costs, dang the passengers actually waiting for a train.
A seat less waiting area is a terrible waiting area no matter how beautiful it looks.
