Railroad Forums

  • Finally finished an interactive map of US Rail! Includes Railroad Crossings, Bridges, Tunnels, etc.

  • For topics on Class I and II passenger and freight operations more general in nature and not specifically related to a specific railroad with its own forum.

Hello Everyone!

Back in 2016, I was taking the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Reno, and I thought it would be fun to mark out every railroad crossing along the way.

Now, 4 years later, I'm still working on the map, and I think now is a good time to finally release it to the public!

While the map is far from done, I thought some of you could get a kick out of it.

The map is here:

(if that link is broken, try https://sites.google.com/view/usrail/home)

Hope this helps some of you :)

Hi everyone!

Image

A few months ago, I released an early version of a map that I'm working on to the public. Now, I can finally say that it's complete (sort of).

The largest change that I've made is the mapping is not done manually. I've managed to import the US railroad crossing database into Mapbox, and so I can say that every railroad crossing is included. This, along with OpenRailwayMap has allowed me to say that this can definitely be used normally!

Feel free to check it out at map.eliothertenstein.com!

Enjoy!

Best,

Eliot

This is amazing!

Can I send you an update, a change in the railroads of Terre Haute, Indiana, that is probably too new to feature in your sources? It eliminates a diamond crossing between the Indiana Railroad and a CSX mainline, and greatly reduces traffic over another diamond a mile or two away. Just tell me how to send it to you.
