The latest NRHS Bulletin has a comprehensive article by Walter E. Zullig, who retired as chief counsel of Metro-North, about the formation and present operations of Metro-North. I was interested to note the following in his account of the New Haven Line:

" ... the railroad constructed and operated its own power generating plant at Cos Cob ...
"The plant burned coal for many years and had been the subject of numerous complaints and lawsuits from the suburban community that gradually built up nearby." [italics mine]

[Nobody told us there was going to be actual smoke coming from those stacks -- and we got a really good deal on the house, too ...]
