Anyone know why the west end of the side runaround track, just past the station passenger platform, was cut off from the main track?
I believe this was done in 2020.
Why?

The cut was sometime in early 2018.

I was told that K and SD were made single ended because it would be (a little) cheaper to implement PTC for each turnout removed. Go figure... no freight out that way these days so not really any meets.

No surprise that was done, although the NY & A has "freight rights" as far east as Southold, they cut freight service back to Riverhead about 11 years ago.

The only time I recall the Southold siding being used for LIRR trains was 9 years ago during the Tall Ships at Greenport event when they ran extra trains to Greenport, and after an eastbound had engine issues, a westbound run wound up "parked" on the Southold siding waiting for the very late eastbound train to pass.
