Does anyone know the official numbers and their model year (or year built) of the new M8? Looking at the TTMG Insider Guide roster, it seems that 9422-9443 and 9701-9738 are the 60 new units, but I need confirmation. Last I checked, that 60 matches with what Metro-North optioned some years back. Also, are all the new units owned by the MTA?

A saga that began in 2005 finally is complete. That year the appropriations and bonds for the purchase of the new cars was considered and approved by the General Assembly with an estimated cost (CT share only, 65/35 split with NY) of $675 million (2005 value), with additional fare increases between 2012 and 2018 to pay off the new cars. The base order was completed in 2015, followed by options for SLE and fleet/capacity expansion.

Will the MTA/CTDOT need more M8 cars for the planned service via the Hells Gate line to Penn Station?

I believe that’s what these cars were for, plus Shore Line East. I do wonder how many trainsets Penn Access service will require.
