While some of the deterioration evident in this period was due to severe winter weather, the bulk was due to poor operations as indicated by the cumulative causes of delays as taken from the Amtrak Twitter Alert sites:

UNFORESEEN CREW ISSUES = 1
WEATHER = 6
AMTRAK HOLDS = 9
3RD PARTY INTERFERENCE = 11
CANCELLED / ANNULLED = 16
AMTRAK EQUIPMENT FAILURES = 55
HOST RAILROAD = 128
N.O.S. = 187

That is almost 400 delays on the selected services. The extrapolated figure for the entire system must be horrendous.

In addition, the recent cancellations / annulments of the "Pennsylvanian" and the "Empire Builder" in which no alternative transportation was provided clearly shows the lack of interest in providing reliable service.

In view of the foregoing, the current Amtrak PR campaign for expanded services seems to be nothing but a sham.

Had an off-line query as to what Amtrak does to ameliorate / assist passengers who are stuck on board during the extended delays.

I'm not familiar with whatever -- if anything -- that Amtrak does, but the same question popped up with the 7' 15" delay to the southbound "City of New Orleans" yesterday that occurred because of engine failure south of Jackson between 11:45 AM and
7 PM.

I did not see any reports as to what conditions were on board the train or whether or not the "hotel" services were functioning.
