I was looking at transithistory.org earlier today and I saw this:

"Awaiting contracted overhaul (2 locomotives) : 010, 011"

Does anybody have any additional information about this? I heard a rumor earlier this week that MassDOT was going to buy the two MP36s as they did with 1056, 1062, 1117, and 1120.

I haven’t seen any contracted overhauls awarded yet with the MP36s, but they are still overhauling the F40s. Also 1118, 1130, 1132, 1136, and 1137 massdot bought.

They would most likely go to Wabtec/Erie for overhaul,Boise shop is shut down by now.

The MBTA is part of MassDOT, they cannot buy what they already own.

Yeah, it's not really bought, more like transferred within the organization. It changes which part of the budget/accounting the funds come from to perform work and repair.

Mbta and massdot are two separate agencies, but they do interchange equipment with one another, depending on who owns the equipment. That means that the Mbta owned can be used by massdot and massdot owned can be used by the Mbta as they do now.

It's like the Massachusetts Turnpike or the "Metropolitan Highway" (Turnpike Extension + Big Dig). Same mothership but they are not supposed to intermix the dollars (yeah right).

Like i said, they are 2 separate agencies. The Mbta runs the trains and massdot runs the overall transportation network for the entire state of all modes but yes as you all stated above they do share equipment and other such stuff with one another. It even states on the roster that the massdot owns the locos, but they can be operated in Mbta service.

Both units are headed to Middleboro Sunday. Whether they get shipped out or go down to Rochester remains to be seen.

And the winner is Rochester. Not sure if they are rebuilding them there or if it’s getting sent out as part of the f40 rebuild program.

I have a strong feeling that they are prob going to overhaul them there just like they are currently doing to 1137. I will assume that unless I see a contract awarded to have it done elsewhere. It’s still up in the air at this point, even though they are sitting in Rochester.

No, they are not. The MBTA is a division of MassDOT, as are all regional transit authorities within the Commonwealth.

The MBTA is a division of MassDOT, the RTAs are locally controlled, manage their own operations but must hire private operating companies to provide their services.https://www.mass.gov/info-details/overv ... -authority The Rail and Transit Division (RTD) controls the purse strings (the one RTA I looked at had a dismal 15% farebox recovery).

The MP 36's are a Boise/Wabtec product, figure on Wabtec/GE/Erie, doing the rebuild they will have the original specs at Erie by now

MBTX 000010 & MBTX 000011(010&011) will be going to MPI. I am not sure yet if it was added to the F40 contract or they received their own contract.
