Hopper cars filled with ballast are a common sight on maintenance trains, especially with the addition of the third track to the main line. Where does the LIRR get the ballast? Via what route is it delivered? Can the LIRR maintenance hoppers travel on the tracks of other railroads?

They are loaded in CT, and are hauled by P&W via Fresh Pond. The cars can be interchanged anywhere, though they only need to run to the mine in CT.
