It had 18 cars that the RS-70 picked up at Gershow (Scrap iron). Once it switched power to face west, it probably picked up more cars at BRT. I don't know how many but lately the west bounds have close to 30 cars.

Interesting roll of the dice: leave the train on the main and runaround the power in the siding via the above photo post. That sometimes can work against you!

Just saw 4 engines at pinelawn go east over the crossing to change tracks/direction. Some car apparently honked at the train... so odd

The nearest WYE to turn around the 4 units with the short hood facing west, would have been at the Brookhaven National Lab wye. However, that has been de-activated many years ago. The tracks are still there but the switches have been removed.

Think the 2 wye’s left for NYA area is Belmont( can’t use East leg) and of course Fresh Pond. They should build one at Pineaire between the Pilgrim switch and the long siding Pineaire double ended freight. No more runs to Port Jeff or Montauk. If a car has to turned from our east( unable to unload a boxcar the way it faces) it has to head back to Fresh Pond.

Ages ago there was a wye at PW, could have easy IM yard before developments overrun the area.
Spine cars would have been best bet of not fouling the 3rd rail

I caught them passing though yaphank last Sunday and they switched BRT. Do they normally run on Sunday?

Yes RS-70 Sun- Thurs for a few years now. Called extra on Friday

Backshop,

There was a restriction as per the LIRR Timetable Special Instructions: Cars of 80 or more feet in length prohibited from the West leg of PW. That may knock out an intermodal flat!

But you could shove into that from the east wye track, spine cars are 55-60 ft long anyway, now moot as area has been developed.

Agree 100%. Everything will remain in North Jersey. You won’t see intermodal on Long Island or the LIRR. Especially now how they use well cars and piggyback flats have fallen by the wayside.

There has been plenty of spine cars in storage, but thanks to covid, find string of them back in frontline intermodal services now
