LIRR Superintendents of Transportation, the men whose initials appear at the bottom of every train order issued, stops with Joseph Antonucci. http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirrphotos/ ... TATION.pdf

Dates Initials Name

6/94 – 5/2000 RPK RAYMOND P. KENNY
5/00 – 6/01 RPK/WTJ RAYMOND P. KENNY / WM. T. JEFFRIES
6/01 – 11/02 WTJ WILLIAM T. JEFFRIES
11/02 – 5/04 NH NAT HAMM

Anyone can help to add further updates as follows?

1. The last year that Antonucci was Supt. of Transportation.
2. Who succeeded him and for what time frame.

Thanks!

In the transmission of Form 19's (and then Form L's) the initials served both as a "authorization" and a eom/fini/radio "over" and was huge during the telegraphy period. It was still used that way into voice telephony and without it, it was incomplete and not to be given out. Sometimes the operator would get everything else but the dispatcher would withhold the initials pending word from the cops, signal or getting yelled at by the chief.

I don't recall when his regime started but Bob Mcdermott (RAM) preceded RPK in/around 95-96. It was always fun to get a order over the speaker and then told to "RAM it!", instead of hearing R-A-M.

In the MTAs quest to add management (appointed, non represented) positions, the job of Superintendent - Transportation was superseded by General Supt - Transportation, and four new Superintendent - Transportation positions were created.

After several years, the position was changed to Chief Transportation Officer, and two additional General Superintendent positions added.

Later, a position of Vice President - Operations was added, to be later supplemented by a Senior Vice President - Operations.

Train Orders were traditionally signed by the Superintendent, Superintendent-Transportation, General Superintendent, and then (for a short time) Chief Transportation Officer as years passed and management expanded under government operation and taxpayer financing.

Traditionally, the man signing train orders was qualified on the Rules of the Operating Departments and Physical Characteristics. There was a departure from this requirement with political appointee Robert Carbaugh and several others who never earned these qualifications.

This of course drew criticism both within the Railroad and the industry, and caused a great loss of morale in the qualified ranks of likely successors. The oversight was remedied and generally, since that time, the signatory of train orders is at least technically qualified on the Rules.

You listed my 'favorite' worst LIRR pres in my commuting history - the ticket clerk AKA Mr. Dermody. The one who told me face to face that there really weren't any commuters east of Huntington, that it was ALL farmland out here (where most of the farms have been gone for 50 or 60 plus years).

I have received this update:

5/81 – 1984 CWP CHARLES W. POWERS (as Chief Transportation Officer)
1985 – 1987 REC ROBERT E. CARBAUGH (as Chief Transportation Officer)
1987 - 6/94 JJD JAMES J. DERMODY

The train order you've indicated above from 1986 indicates CWP, whereas the list indicated REC from 1985-87.
As Chief Transportation Officer and Supt. of Transportation are two different titles, is it possible that both CWP and REC were used interchangeably on train orders???

Thanks!
