I have recently acquired some photos that were taken by Phillipe H. Bonnet in the 1960s. I have narrowed down the location to Newton near Washington Street, but I can't quite find this location under construction. Can you help?

Ware's Jewelers was at 311 Center Street, Newton Corner in picture three, now the brick building that used to be Cahner's. That would be Galen coming in on the right. Certainly the fourth picture is the bridge over the as yet unfinished Pike. I think the second is Newton Corner too. The first is further out on Washington street, which was re-routed for the Pike, so the tracks needed to be rerouted as well. But that is only a guess. It looks like that sweeping turn near Bigelow MS.

Wow, the intersection has completely changed with all new buildings, it seems. Thanks for the location confirmation. Which line was this?

<sigh> formerly the Watertown Line. Green Line branch A, which was discontinued in 1969. The car barn there remained and non-revenue runs continued until 1994 as some repairs were still done there. Wikipedia has a good entry on the line. "Green Line A branch". The line was replaced by the 57 bus route. Having ridden both I can say the bus service with transfer at Kenmore is horrible. Bring back the A line!

Service car #40 is not in or near Central Sq. None of the places in Cambridge that I know had 4-5 story brick buildings of that vintage have the uphill side street.

5308 isn't in or near Central Sq. either. Both River St. and Western Ave. went straight across the Charles. And the Charles would be the river behind the wall. Maybe Watertown Sq.?

Guessing 5328 at night has just crossed the Charles from Arsenal St. to Western Ave.

I lived in the building behind 5315 as it straightens out on Broookline back in the '70s. Dain Drugs in the 3rd photo was a pizza parlor at that time.
Elm Farm Foods in the photo of 5305 at the Mass. Ave. platforms was later Purity Supreme.
