Hello,
Today's SLQ eastbound 394 departed Richmond around 1445 and arrived in Island Pond at 1838 with the following:

GP40-3 3805
RM-1 805
GP40 3004
11 centerbeam flats
2 bulkhead flats
4 covered hoppers
5 tank cars
2 propane cars
6 hi-cube boxcars
8 ballast hoppers

That's 38 cars total, including 29 loads and 9 empties. I am guessing that the ballast hoppers will be/were spotted at East Brighton for loading.
Have a great night,
Fritz

Yes, they were on the side track loaded with ballast when we passed through East Brighton yesterday afternoon.

SLR 393 Eng 805-3805-3803-803-3007 by South Paris at 2005 with 47 cars including
a dozen Ciment du Quebec hoppers head pin followed by a similar sized string of chemical
tank cars ( mostly hydrochloric acid ), a string of LPG tanks and then a mix of cars after that.
Been averaging 30-35 cars the past few weeks so a little bit bigger tonight.

Hello,
The same 393 that passed through South Paris last evening departed Island Pond this morning at 0834 with 54 cars (they added 7 empties from RCP in Island Pond on the headpin).

There should be 393/394s running tonight as they picked up 100 cars in Montreal yesterday, and apparently there's another 100 waiting to be picked up today.

ECI headed east out of Island Pond around 0745 this morning. Not sure where they are working or what they are doing (but possibly a crossing replacement east of town).
Best,
Fritz

After several unsuccessful trips to Island Pond, I finally saw a train tonight! I was parked a few miles above the yard when I heard the beautiful sound that only a fleet of EMD’s can produce.
394 came by with 3047, 3035, 6904 and 59 cars. Sorry I can’t provide the details Fritz can but the consist was 28 boxes, 23 tanks, 5 loads of lumber, 2 loads of telephone poles and a hopper.
They arrived at the yard at 19:09 and departed at 19:24 after settling out 2 loads of lumber. According to the conductor tonight’s 393 will only be 21 cars, with an empty to be picked up at Island Pond in the morning.

Mike,
That was a lucky catch! They rarely run on Wednesday nights, maybe 2-3 times in the last six months!

And, for the first time in many moons, they have run four nights in a row this week (Monday-Thursday). Tonight's very early SLQ eastbound 394 arrived in Island Pond at 1800 with the following:

GP40-2 3007
RLHH SD40-2 3403
5 centerbeam flats
3 propane cars
4 tank cars
1 covered hopper
1 boxcar
7 hi-cube boxcars

That's 21 cars total, including 19 loads and 2 empties.

It doesn't sound like they will run tomorrow night, as there was no train to Montreal today.
Have a great night,
Fritz

Saw SLR 394 passing through Lennoxville this evening and chased it to Waterville. It was running a bit late - it was in Waterville around 7 PM.

3805
805
3047
8 centerbeams
14 boxcars (mostly 60-foot)
8 ballast cars
7 LPG tank cars
13 various other tank cars
4 hoppers
2 bulkhead pole flats
2 high-sided gondolas

That's 58 cars total (mostly loaded). After watching the head end at Courval road I ended up waIting for quite some time in Waterville (the next crossing) before it arrived, where it crested the grade at about 10 mph. From past trains that's slower than two slug sets would have crested the grade with a similar train - and I'd wager it's because 3047 was in power-matching mode on the entire grade (lower turbo whine - and lower hp). It's on trains like these that the extra motors of an SD40 or slug set come into play.

I was told trains are a few hours later than normal due to some late season track work they are doing in Canada.

There should be healthy cuts of 60' CN/FBOX pulp coming down to NEPW as well, that volume has jumped up a bit in recent months. LPG season is starting up too, they've already got cars stored at Lewiston Junction and on the NECR waiting for everyone to start turning up those thermostats end of this month or early next.

Hello,
I finally managed to catch the SLR again after several weeks of crazy schedules (for both them and for me!).

Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0837 with the following:

RM-1 805
GP40-3 3805
10 centerbeam flats
3 covered hoppers
1 tank car
2 hi-cube boxcars

That's 16 cars total, all empties! The ten centerbeams were pulled from RCP, so they only had six cars arriving in the Pond last night!

But the good news is that, according to word on the street (or in the store actually), they have returned to their normal schedule of four days per week starting this week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday departures.
Have a great day,
Fritz

Hello,
Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0807 and reached the U.S. Canada border at 0857 with the following:

RM-1 804
GP40-3 3804
RLHH SD40-2 3403
QG GP40-2W 3014
QG GP40 3105
7 centerbeam flats
1 bulkhead flat
1 covered hopper
4 tank cars
6 propane cars

That's 19 cars total, all empties and all were from either Island Pond (centerbeam flats) or Lewiston Junction/Lewiston Branch (rest of train). Needless to say, only the first two locomotives were on-line. Maybe SLR rushed things a bit to return to four trains per week, but I will note that they brought 60+ cars east on Monday night and 40+ cars east last night.
Have a great day,
Fritz

Hello,
The SLR/SLQ did indeed run road trains four nights this week. Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond early and arrived at the U.S. Canada border at 0745 with the following:

GP40 3004
GP40-3 3803
RM-1 803
10 centerbeam flats
10 propane cars
6 tank cars
1 covered hopper

That's 27 cars total, all empties.
Have a great weekend,
Fritz

Thursday's 393 was four units and about 70 cars through S. Paris, with lots of tanks (fuel and paper service), a few empty centerbeams/bulkhead flats, and a handful each of cement cars/other hoppers to go with roughly 15 or so boxes (about half of them high cubes).

In other news, 3806 was spotted outside the CAD shops patched and primed/ready for paint, perhaps it will end up back this way soon.

Casey,
Thanks for the info on 3806. I didn't realize it was being rebuilt at CAD. Hopefully, it will return to the SLR in its new paint!

Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0823 with the following:

GP40-3 3804
RM-1 804
13 centerbeam flats
11 covered hoppers
5 propane cars
5 tank cars
3 boxcars
1 hi-cube boxcar
1 hi-sided gondola

That's 39 cars total, including 1 load and 38 empties. That seems like a lot of cars - although empty - for one engine and 8 powered axles!

By the way, crossings are being rebuilt north (Lake Station Road) and south (VFW Fishing Access Road) of Norton Pond.
Have a great day,
Fritz
