I didn't know that, which explains why it will take a year to complete.

Welders are using blow torches to cut the supports and then a crane lowers it to the ground.

As for the shuttle buses, why not just extend the bus routes that terminate at Lechmere and have them terminate at North Station instead. There is a dedicated bus lane. If they don't want to extend all four bus routes, perhaps extend the 87 & 88 as they alternate every 10 minutes to/from Lechmere.

B line was shortened to Park because it was difficult to keep it on schedule. Nothing has changed so don't expect a change to GC.

Not pictured, some form work with rebar is up near the concrete viaduct looking ready to pour soon.

The stations are across the street from each other. Depending on where you're going, the extra walk is only a few hundred feet at most.

Even though the walking distance for most Lechmere users is only a few hundred feet longer, it is much more off-putting and intimidating because of a big high traffic street ( McGrath Hwy) to have to cross.

There was a movement to install a pedestrian overpass, i don't know if that went anywhere or was lost in the de-costing round. Seems like a no-brainer. Though it's safe to assume that you will generally be with a pretty good pack of people crossing the street from there.

Why haven't they removed these pillars? 80% of the structure from the Gilmore Bridge to Lechmere was removed by June 20th. Why haven't these four pillars been removed? When I was there about three weeks ago, a woman from some preservation society was observing the area. In their current location, the pillars interfere with track placement. What do they plan to do with them? Construction is going on around these pillars. They haven't changed in the 13 days between these two photographs.

On a somewhat related note, when the Science Park station was rebuilt after the Green Line relocation, the overhead walkway between the Museum of Science and the station was eliminated so you now have to cross the McGrath highway/Storrow Drive at street level. In my humble opinion, sacrificing safety for aesthetics.

News media reported that making the pedestrian overpasses handicap accessible, was supposedly not feasible in the space available, which is why they were torn down.

That kind of behavior makes me angry; those laws/rules should be changed.

Same occurred when the pedestrian bridge at West 8th Street in Coney Island connecting the NY Aquarium with the elevated subway station was removed in 2013. Reportedly the bridge was maintained by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCSNY) which operates the aquarium and not NYCT and wasn't footing the bill for
improvements to keep up to spec. All pedestrians now use the street level crosswalk.

I agree. We need common sense in these matters. You are going to penalize and endanger everyone especially all the children going to the Museum of Science? Remember the CDOT mess:

It's my understanding, mostly from reading here, that federal ADA requires all reasonable accommodations, but the state requires equal access. So if there are two entrances they must both be ADA accessible even if the second would require an extra $100M.

Just a guess, but taking the pillars down vs the superstructure requires a different set of skills. Rather than just unbolting/cutting and hauling, excavation would need to be done for removal of the buried footings. It may be a different contract entirely.
