Hello all, new to the forums but a long time railfanner since I was around 12 (16 years old now). In updates on the M9 fleet and delivery, cars 9009-9010 have finally entered service in addition to 9047-9048, 9053-9054, 9055-9056, 9057-9058, and 9063-9064. 9011-9012-9013-9014 are still in testing. 9041-9042 was delivered over the lower Montauk a few weeks ago, the rest of the 9040s except 47-48 and 9050s (50, 51, 52, 59)should shortly follow and enter service soon. 9060s except for the in service pair and 9070s have been testing. I believe the highest spotted car on property now is 9084. We have come quite the way ! There are two 12 car sets and two 6 car sets running for a total of 36 cars. More likely to enter service over summer. :-D

Thank you very much, I'm looking forward to share new information as time progresses on. In other terms, I know this isn't related to M9s but an M3 finally ran today on train 45 to Penn station. First time an M3 has ran in service in about 3 1/2 months.

I'm surprised they wouldn't use the M-3's as much as possible to get the last ounce of service out of them before retirement. Less wear and tear on the M-7 fleet would make them last longer. Any LIRR people on here to shed some light on their thinking?

Does anyone here know how many M-9 cars are in revenue service at this point in time? Doubt that it's more than fifty, which would be maybe five trains. Years ago when the M-7's were coming on-line there was a LIRR employee on here who used to give us an official count every week. Don't know if he's still with us.

I don’t know the exact number but as Greg said, a lot are in service. If I go to Nassau County, I’ll likely spend time in Garden City and a few of the stations along the Main Line.

Update for July 3rd, 9065-9066 have been added into service on a set. Also, I have spotted on the tracker for train 424 to port Washington, a 10 car M9 with 9072 as the leader telling us that 9071-9072 is most likely in service, will check again in a few minutes. A test train with 9074-9075 on the end is out there and 9061-9062 were delivered through jamaica station by an Mp15 a few days ago along with 9051-9052.

Okay J.R. So theoretically there should be 72 M-9's in service but it's obviously less than that as they're not being delivered in strict consecutive order. Thanks for the update. :-D

Now does anyone know how many M-3's are still in revenue service?

The M3s are still being stored as spares at the moment.

Thanks gregorygrice. So okay, if we assume there are maybe 50 M-9's in service, there are probably 4 to 6 such trains running depending on their number of cars in the consist. Not a heck of a lot of trains and the chances of catching one at this time are minimal.

Actually, they're fairly easy to find at this point and the TrainTime app makes it twice as easy. Perfect example; today I rode a set from Penn to Jamaica on my way home and upon arriving at Jamaica there were two other seperate sets heading in the other direction.
