Almost all rail-trail's in the state do NOT allow motorized use. This one is an exception being managed by a club known as "Snow Shoe Rails to Trails" last year they had over 3,200 members, who do pay to have a usage permit for the trail. The people who come to this trail to ride bring money into the area and when they have events (like the dinner coming up this weekend) the place will be packed with people, hotels booked, and so forth.

This re-activation would be a huge loss for the community, they are proposing a huge landfill, quarry, and an ethanol plant. That would ruin the the forests and scenery of the area forever. I live near a landfill, even from where I am at, sometimes the smell of goes for miles.

Let's see. Occasional local revenue from special events versus three big businesses paying taxes for the entire year, every year, who even if they cease to operate will pay more in taxes than if the land remains vacant. Temporary construction jobs 7 days a week for easily 12-24 months, and permanent jobs for a lot of people after that. That's a "loss" to the community?

I think it's probably best left up to the people who live in the community to determine whether or not it's a net benefit, not those of us who'd prefer to see all trails returned to rails.

Personally, I hope it DOES go through. To say nothing of being a railfan who loves to see reactivated trackage, I'm also a railroad employee who stands to benefit from this. Though I work for a class one, someone has to interchange to RJC to get trains to them. Thats more work for me and my brothers & sisters in the T&E ranks.

Most of the town is against it because it means a huge landfill bringing in train loads of out of state garbage. PA is already a dumping ground for out of state garbage as it is. I like to see rails used, but for this??

For what its worth I documented what I could about the Beech Creek Railroad.

Your documentation of this line is amazing and the SSRT group is doing a great job maintaining their 19 mile section for many to enjoy.

Very well done tour of the line. Now all we need is for someone to discover a bunch of pics in their great grandfather's attic which show it back when it was busy! (I know...."dream on"! :( )

Ive been wanting to get a set of the valuations maps for the line to help locate and identify artifacts. There was a guy who knew a lot about the line but he passed away a few years ago. He provided a lot of information .
