It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Ben Schaeffer after a battle with Covid-19. Ben was not only a conductor for New York City Transit, he was a lifelong transit historian. Ben spent over 40 years documenting the waterfront railways of New York. Ben was the Conductor on several of the museum train excursions. A huge loss.

Everyone: I remember Ben Schaeffer and was shocked about his sudden passing due to COVID-19.

Ben was a longtime member of the Long Island Sunrise Trail Chapter-NRHS and had
interest in LIRR history. In recent years he would visit RMLI in Riverhead and assist
with the library and archive and do historical research as well.

Even though Ben would not attend LIST Chapter meetings or other events occurring on
the Jewish Sabbath (sundown Friday to sundown Saturday) being observant he was
very active in rail history groups along with his work for New York City Transit.
