RE and Everyone:

Good move by NJT to remember their heritage with the 40th Anniversary of NJ Transit's creation.
This is basically an advertisement-type center stripe "wrap" that was used.

7036-Pennsylvania (cab car)
7236-CNJ (yellow on green)
7606-Erie Lackawanna
7666-PRSL
7681-Conrail
7245-NJDOT

Another cab car should represent the Erie Lackawanna (the Hoboken Division services)
instead of a coach. All of the color schemes used are accurate remembering past equipment.

Interesting that Penn Central was not one of the predecessors honored - the PC ran commuter trains on
the NEC, NJCL (along with CNJ) and Princeton Branch for 8 years two months (2/1/1968 to 3/31/1976).

Conrail ran what literally was the entire New Jersey commuter rail system for 6 years 3 months (4/1/1976
to 12/31/1982) inheriting the operations from all four predecessors (PC, CNJ, EL and PRSL) at the time.

Inside each named coach should be a poster describing each railroad and how their routes became what
is now NJ Transit Rail Operations in 1983. A little history lesson is always good...MACTRAXX

They should have used PC and not the PRR.

Since they used the PRR, they should have used the Erie and the DL&W and not the EL for the same reason.

Wish they had wrapped locomotives. Would have been interesting to see an ALP-46 in Tuscan red with cat whiskers not to mention a GP-40 painted up CNJ again.

To be fair, doing this to the coaches costed NJT nothing, while repainting an engine (which they are already short on) would have been a lot more pricey.

I think it’s a nice way to celebrate heritage. I agree that locomotives would be cooler, but I’ll take what I can get.

cost of this would probably have covered a engineers class, just sayinn.

Actually, if you’d read the article, you would’ve seen that it was done at no extra cost to NJT.

sure and you believe it.

It must be noted that 2019 is not the 40th anniversary of NJ Transit rail operations. NJ Transit took over NJ rail service on January 1, 1983, so 2023 would be the appropriate year for commemoration.

2019 is the 40th anniversary of NJ Transit taking over Public Service Electric and Gas Company's bus subsidiary.

Ken (and Everyone)

Beginning in mid 1979 NJ Transit began to oversee the contract operation by Conrail - New Jersey commuter
rail service. In the late 1970s titles on timetables were gradually changed from Conrail being front and center
to "NJDOT Commuter Rail Service". The mention of NJ Transit began during the second half of 1979 after the
agency was created. NJ Transit was then described as the state's "new public transit agency".

A good early visible example of NJ Transit's influence were the rail timetables issued beginning in 1980-1981
which used a standard design replacing the various folders/sizes issued by the predecessors. New timetables
had two basic colors - Red for the Newark Division and dark Blue for the Hoboken Division. The first issues of
these timetables contained multiple pages and were a PITA to correctly fold . Over the course of the 80s
NJ Transit improved the format of their rail timetables especially after direct takeover of rail service in 1983.

The references to national government, current events and pop culture obviously targets those who are not
rail or transit history buffs or enthusiasts...

BSH: I'll settle for a set of Microscale decals with the 40th Anniversary NJ Transit graphics/designs

Sorry, I forgot my tin foil hat :P
The originally linked-article says "NJT’s Heritage Coach project was developed, at no extra cost to the agency, with Intersection." THeir website
https://www.intersection.com/advertising-partnerships/ says "Intersection offers media products that natively weave into people’s lives as they journey through public spaces. We’ve strategically placed our media in well-traveled locations on city streets, in transit systems, and at airports. " So that sounds like advertising in stations, advertising wraps on cars, ... (see the picture on the web site). WIthout knowing more than this, the "Heritage cars" sure sound like a "sweetener" thrown in by them to get a larger deal with NJT.

Nothing is really free, as pointed out. Perhaps the NJT negotiator could have responded by saying "forget the historical RR wraps, just raise what you are paying us by $XXX for advertising rights, and then you've got the deal!"

NJT took over NJDOT's passenger rail division in 1979, though operated by Conrail crews. New NJT livery began appearing in 1980-81.
