Lost in all of this is the fact the MBTA had the perfect opportunity to replace the
two bridges and trestles. Instead, northside passengers will have to endure a span
by span replacement in the coming years with all the messy congestion issues and
the like.

Well, they did use the closure as an opportunity to replace the tired asphalt platforms at North Station with new concrete platforms and shelters, whichturned out to be fairly short-lived since they were in turn replaced by the current high level platforms during the New Garden construction. As for the bascule bridges, they were 30 years younger then than they are now, and my guess is that back in 1985 replacement just wasn't something that needed any sort of immediate attention.

Whistling past the graveyard as far as I am concerned. The bridges were acting up then
and for the last 15 years have been, at times, a bear to deal with. Opportunity lost!
