The majority of applicants seem to be veterans. Being in the military is almost like an unwritten requirement for railroad employment. I've considered joining the military because of this.

Not true, especially within commuter rail operations verse class one freight carriers..

While I work with plenty Veterans. I would say a majority still have no military back ground including myself. And I work for a Class 1 working in commuter service.
