Could someone explain what the elevated boxes are in this found photo? Thanks.

Those are baggage elevators that were used in ancestral times, bringing up baggage carts from a passageway that ran beneath the tracks from the station situated to the left in the photo. The boxes on top housed the lift mechanism.
