Amtrak just announced limited NEC service NYP-BOS for tomorrow (Wednesday), so that's good news for MBTA CR's use of the corridor.

There two trainsets running around to break track. The Fitchburg one got stopped on
the way back in order to retrieve HSP46 2008 from Fitchburg Yard, as it apparently froze
up..

About 3 inches less snow.

Far lesser impact on transportation due to the effort made to get people off the streets in advance.

21 inch storm in late January, reduced potential for plowing as piles were already high.

In 1978 it took a week to get all the stranded cars off 128. Driving ban lasted 5 days.

MBTA did not operate for 4 days. People used the Green Line reservations for cross country skiing. Some service resumed underground.

LRVs did well - PCCs did not. The storm marked the end of GE PCCs, the few remaining were retired within a year. Picture Window cars included, but they goy a reprieve in 1980.

Far more coastal damage in 1978.

The Blizzard of '78 was not predicted ahead of time. People didn't know how bad it would be until they tried to drive home. The blizzard of 2015 was pretty accurately predicted in MA, days and days ahead of time. And the brunt/start was before the morning commute.

The 1978 storm caught people by surprise. Weather forecasting has come a long way since 1978 mostly as a result of more accurate computer modeling. The computers available at the time except for a few supercomputers were barely as powerful as the average smartphone is today.

…what is the status of tomorrow's Patriots' parade - should be a real challenge - instead of duck boats, use dog sleds…how much of the T will be running? What a game!!! In the same category as Franco Harris's 'immaculate reception' against the Raiders in a long distance Super Bowl…what game!!!
