If you can, try to explore the r o w after a light snowfall - that's the condition that seems to work best for me. The snow seems to highlight man-made features in the landscape.

The most fascinating part of my own investigation into the NYH&N was how the railroad dropped down from Rye Lake into downtown White Plains. Even when you drive on I-684, it's a considerable drop down into the valley. Oddly enough, the NYH&N's White Plains terminal was not far from the New York, Westchester & Boston's on Westchester Ave. The Westchester Southern would have taken over from White Plains down to the Bronx.

I'll post some of my White Plains maps later on, if they are of interest.
