Livingston has rail lines nearly on all sides, but nothing in Livingston itself as far as I know.
1. Just to the north there is a private freight "short line" called the Morristown and Erie that runs from Morristown east through Whippany and East Hanover, then goes past the north tip of Livingston and now ends around Route 280. Maybe only a few trains a week on the Route 280 end, if that.
2. From Morristown (actually starting further northwest), there is the NJ Transit commuter train "Morris and Essex" line that goes to Madison, Chatham, Summit, Short Hills, and then through the Oranges to Newark (Broad St. station by 280), and from there trains continue either to Hoboken or to New York Penn Station (the latter via the "midtown direct" connection). Chatham, Summit, Short Hills, and Millburn stations are all close to the southern edge of Livingston. (The Morristown and Erie freight line connects to the rest of the world via the NJT Morris and Essex line at Morristown).
3. To the east is the NJ Transit "Montclair/Boonton Line" (more commuter trains) which comes up from the same Broad St station in Newark, through Glen Ridge and Montclair, then turning west and going through Boonton, eventually joining the Morris and Essex line (after Morristown) near Dover to run further west. There are multiple stops from Glen Ridge through Montclair close to Livingston. Heading towards Newark it joins the Morris and Essex line just west of Newark, and some trains go to Hoboken after Newark and some to NY Penn station.
4. There are a few old abandoned spurs that were also close (Erie Orange branch, Erie Caldwell branch) but they are long long gone....

If you're looking to commute, there's a shuttle bus from Livingston Mall to the South Orange Station during rush hours (AM to the train, PM from the train) that was created out of public outcry against the quality and lack of service provided by Community Coach on the #77 bus. The NJT #73 bus connects to Orange, Brick Church, East Orange, and Newark Penn Station.

http://maps.google.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; should do the trick if you zoom in enough. It even shows the stations (and names them if you put the mouse pointer on them). JS
