I ride the JFK AirTrain fairly often since I work for JetBlue and was curious as to what type of signal system they use. I notice that some of the interlockings have directional signals and some of them have lights.

The system is automated, so they don't need wayside signals, per se, all of that is automatic and much more interconnected. But there are directional signals at switching locations so that that trains can find their way in the even they are manually operated.
