Supporters of the Trestle mural project in Newburgh reached a milestone in their fundraising efforts Saturday when they unveiled the beginning of the Commemorative Brick Walkway on Front Street near where the 200 foot mural is going to be painted on the stone railroad trestle bridge.

Two hundred bricks, selling at $100 each, were installed on the walkway.

Fr. William Scafidi, whose brainchild it was to paint the mural, said it is the beginning of a birth of the arts in the city, "a stepping stone of hope."

“I’m just praying that this symbol of the trestle, the mural, will be part of helping in some ways to turn Newburgh around, especially in the area of crime,” he said.

Mayor Nicholas Valentine said the project, coupled with a new art gallery just south of this project, will serve as the gateway to bridge the revitalized waterfront with the remainder of the city. He said a day doesn't go by that a developer doesn't express interest in taking part of Newburgh's rebirth.

Sue Kane, a Trestle founder and current treasurer of the project, thanked Orange County Executive Edward Diana for allocating $10,000 toward the project.

Board Vice President Kiki Hayden, who delivered a corporate sponsorship from John J. Lease Real Estate, said the mural is "phase one of bringing art and culture into the City of Newburgh.

It is the idiot politicians that call it a trestle- it is the viaduct.

BTW, who actually owns the viaduct? If it is CSX, can CSX go after the artist and city for graffiti?
