Hiden in the top, right hand corner of most DepartureVision screens is a tiny little link that says "click here to see trains on map"

When you do click there it brings you to a page with this cool map that shows the real-time (or near real-time) location of all NJT trains. Clicking on the train icon brings up information about stops and such.

Less than a few days, since I checked DV on Fri/Sat and it wasn't there.

I don't know why but for some reason I think that is VERY cool... It's not really practical, it doesn't really mean anything in a real sense, but it is VERY cool. Now if they could just expand the idea with NS and CSX, I could monitor when the freights are coming near Potters out in Edison so I could set up and shoot. I love this.

As a person who runs technology for a financial firm, this totally tickles me. The developers probably had a great time building this...

What's interesting is under a station page the link to click is no longer available.

Is anyone else seeing this now?

Clicking on the stations doesn't do anything for me either.

Also, the link is no longer visible on the DepartureVision screens, unless I'm missing something.

How cool is that! Or should I say "was that"? I probably would rather see that screen than the departure vision
I sure hope they don't hide it permanently.

The link I provided in my first post still works, as of now. Just bookmark that and you'll be all set.

SEPTA's brand new app has a real time tracking feature.... Clearly the website could support it if it's something available via the app. Would be cool if NJT did the same (app included).

I had fun "train watching" with the site this morning.... It's SO silly to track the little icons but I really like this page. Interesting to note that it doesn't have a DNS alias. In other words it's not "NJT_RT.net". It goes only by it's actual IP address, 198.177.3.211 pointing to an asp.net form. I wonder if they considered the site ready for primetime or if they are still developing it? Even the title is rather "dev" (as we'd say in application development):

That's not a title they'd give to a "finished", production ready page.... I'm almost guessing this is a dev page they inadvertantly (or maybe on purpose) "leaked"...

All i know, is that this service, once fully matured, could tie into numerous other services, including mobile app trip planners, both for individual transit networks, and multiple leg trips, such as one i might make from my town to say a museum in nyc or the beach at belmar... :)
