Railroad grade out of Angelica

Both Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern predecessor companies Lackawanna and Pittsburgh and then Lackawanna and Southwestern ran trains from Angelica via Belfast Junction and the WNY&P to Olean. This is because their own line from Angelica to Olean was narrow gauge. These companies also ran passenger trains via that narrow gauge line as indicted in the 1888 L&P timetable and the 1889 L&SW timetable.

After the demise of the L&SW in 1892, the company was reorganized as the Central NY and Western. Shortly thereafter the narrow gauge line was upgraded to standard gauge. Then, the standard gauge line from Angelica to Belfast Jct was no longer needed and removed.

As late as 1906 the PS&N had plans to connect with the Lehigh Valley at Naples and the (New York Central) West Shore at Macedon. It looks like they also planned a connection with the Lehigh Valley somewhere north of Hemlock or perhaps at Lima. See the link for

I took pics of the one remaining L&P stone pier in Angelica on March 1, 2017.

It still has a pole that as electric wires on it.

Built in 1882 and still being used in 2017!

I asked permission from the home owner before I took these pics.

I recently discovered that the narrow gauge Allegany Central had their own line from Belvidere to Angelica.

They had a bridge over the Genesee River. I've attached a 1939 Val Map that shows where the bridge was along Rt. 19 north of Belvidere.

This line was opened in 1882 and closed in "June 1889 when severe rains washed out many segments of the Angelica-Bolivar line and were not rebuilt."

^On Election Day, I stopped at a house along Rt. 19 that is on the narrow gauge grade before the bridge. The lady there knew about the railroad and bridge. Her house sits on the grade.

Yesterday, I went to a farm off of Camp Road outside of Angelica. The narrow gauge railroad grade can easily be seen and is in good shape!!

I was in a rush to get to a Christmas party in Olean so I just took one pic.

I met the landowner and will go back to take more pics.
