Does anyone have a date for the last SD40-2 built? I think some GP39-2s were built after the final SDs in 1985 or 1986 for MKT.

If you count SD40-2F as an SD40-2, then the last SD40-2's were built for CP in 1988...There were also GP38-2's built for CP in 1986 as well.

The export version of SD40-2 (more near to tunnel versions) is still in production line in turkey:

(To the best of my knowledge, in recent years (be sure up to 2001) Koros ( a South Korean company) also had been manufacturing GM GT26CW-2 and FT36 cowl body locomotives)

those are ex-SD45's which CNW sold in the mid 90's and were rebuilt into SD40-3's...

SP 8574 to 8706 were all rebuilt from SD45's (and a few SD40's) from CSX, CNW, conrail, KCS and BN and UP

SP never bought any SD40-2's new

There was a small hand full of Southern Pacific SD45's that were rebuilt to SD40-2 specs but still retain the SD45 look. These locomotives were ordered by SP from Morrson Knutson some time between the late 1960's-late 1970's. The rules of this order were that Southern Pacific was to not send any locomotives for rebuild. MK would supply the whole deal lock, stock, and barrel. To clean out its lines of assorted junk and recycled many old SD40's, SD45's and SD35's for the progam. I beleve only 100+ were rebuilt to SD40 specs for SP.

I clearly recall what the Conrail SD40-2s were like when new. Great power -- fun to run a train with a set of them on the point.

If I came up to Cheyenne, would you give me a shot at the throttle? I'm kidding, of course. But maybe I'm not.

Welcome to RR.net, if indeed you are new.

DC motors are alot more fun to run. Did you work for conrail?

I agree, and yes, I did -- for 27 years, all together. First 15 as an engineer mostly on the extra board. What a life!

I notice you ignored my throttle time request.
