The Long Island Rail Road can now e-mail commuters about its train delays.

The railroad says it has begun an e-mail notification program for customers who have submitted their e-mail addresses.

The message can be sent to computers or pagers. To sign up, go to the LIRR web site.

Well, in theory this is a fantastic idea. However, as many commuters know, the railroad is often painfully slow in communicating delays to news organizations; often by the time delyas are publicized, the situation has been resolved. Unless their lines of communication would seriously improve with the undertaking of this project, it seems to be a waste of time and money.
