Did the Central own any coal mines or did they just use whom ever had the best price. If so were they used strictly for company service or did they also sell to other railroades/ businesses on the side.

I have (so far) found one NYC captive mine.

This was the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corp. As the name suggests, this company was located in PA. As with many other mining properties, Clearfield Bituminous has a somewhat complicated corporate history. It was a captive operation from 1898-1947 when its charter was loosened up to allow its coal to be sold to outside customers (i.e. other than the NYC). Hope this helps.
