Awesome vintage images Mr. Glueck !
FL-9 #301 leading a consist of C-1's through Cold Spring Harbor (Bill Mangahas photo - Sept. 1994)

A fire near the Bayshore station brought service to a halt.
The train in the station later headed back to Babylon where passengers were probably herded onto leased school buses for points east. (Bill Mangahas photo - March 1982)

The "awesome" was fading, but you can't go wrong with ALCO FA locomotives. The roof lines are taller than the P72, ex-MU, coaches, but the squat appearance may be perceptual, as the roof contained some compound curves up front.

We knew, when the pastel colored L2's came online, the LIRR we knew was going to fade. Fortunately, a cadre of college students hung out together and shot as much as we could while the colors began to change. My shots are only a toe's dip in the ocean of what's out there.

Any idea how far past current end of track that bumper is in the West Hempstead shot?

As to the two GP-38s, they are heading west, not east , of Woodside on Mainline 1. Notice the markers. The Port Wash branch tracks 2 & 1 are on the right. Manhattan in the background. Mainline 1 would set up a route to the Mainline cutoff, or to LIC also if the units were just on their way there.
I kinda remember a period when the turntable at Morris Park was OOS for a long time, and engines were turned using the Mainline Cutoff at Harold during the 90's.
Although they are back-to-back, it may have been necessary to turn the double-header for PI or other time-related issues forthcoming, so the the lead unit was not the "guilty party".

About 20 or 30 yards, tops.

Is that a kerosene illuminated signal ?

That is the old SK block limit signal just west of Phillips Avenue in Speonk. Originally kero-lit, it has been converted to electricity. Note the wires leading to the signal heads.
