I have a friend who's looking at a house in Hillsboro, OR, which (after a bit of Google Mapping and research) appears to back up against the tracks of the Port of Tillamook Bay railroad. While a great location for railfanning for some of us, he's a little more concerned about getting a good night's sleep, especially since the house is a block from a crossing. (The train itself won't be too loud, since the maximum speed on the branch is 10mph, but the whistle blows for the crossing are of concern.)

Is anyone familiar with this railroad? What are the traffic levels like? Are we talking 2-3 movements per day mostly during the daytime, or 24-hour operations with 10 trains every night (not likely, since they only have 18 locomotives, but you never know)?

If trains are a concern, tell him to forget it. Trains can run at any time and schedules change. And the people who thought they could predict a certain schedule or volume are the ones who cry when the big bad railroad dares to wake them up. Regardless of what the line does today, what happens if a contractor starts doing track rehab days and the trains all run at night? What happens if they are lucky enough to land some big customer and DO run 10 trains every night?

Not sure how accurate that is anymore, but it seems like POTB probably doesn't change what works too much.

A couple notes:

1. Although the line might indicate Port of Tillamook Bay in Hillsboro, the line is actually operated by the Portland & Western RR from Hillsboro to Banks. POTB operations start at Banks. (Reason for this is that P&W operates the lines out of Hillsboro as well as the former United Railways line from Banks to United Junction and Linnton, on the former SP&S Astoria Line. So P&W is going to operate over the track no matter what, and there are no local shippers on this segment.)

As a result, there is about one daily train on this line, mostly overhead log traffic. Train speeds are 10 MPH. Timing can be at any time; the P&W is notorious for not running on schedule. A daily rock train used to run on this track, but was discontinued due to track conditions. (The "rock train", a unit train operation for Knife River, now operates between Hillsboro, Wilsonville and Hopmere, near Salem.)

2. POTB experienced substantial damage in the recent storm/flooding event that occurred one week ago. As a result, POTB has placed an embargo on the entire railroad for all traffic. The potential for the railroad to reopen is about 50/50 right now - the cost estimate is $20M, and this line experiences frequent storm and flood related damages. In 1996 the railroad required shy of $15M to make numerous repairs. However Oregon's Congressional delegation is trying to make federal funding a priority to repair the line as two sawmills are dependent on access to this railroad, and the Tillamook County Creamery Association receives inbound shipments of feed via the railroad.

However, the embargo doesn't cover the track from Hillsboro to Banks.
