The "normal" trips between during the time FDR traveled between Washington and his home at Hyde Park, NY, (actually detraining at Highland, NY, on NYC's West Shore line) came through NJ in the middle of the night both ways, so it's unlikely that photos exist. Essentially, the schedule was to leave DC around 8-9 PM and arrive at Highland in the morning, with the reverse move following approximatelythe same times. But surely there must be photos of campaign trains and other special trips done in daylight.

Assuming FDR took the B&0/CNJ routing from DC....how/where did they make the transition to the West Shore?

Using the northbound run as an example, the train left the CNJ at Claremont and used the National Docks RR to a junction with the NYC's freight line that ran between Weehawken and the PRR in Jersey City. (Part of this line is now the Hudson-Bergen LRT.) NYC power was sent down from Weehawken to take the train north from Claremont.

I got a DVD about Grand Central Station last Christmas and in this National Geographic produced film, there is mention that there exists possibly a railcar that FDR's train used to transport his limo to a secret railspur under the Waldorf Astoria hotel. At the underground railspur, a secret enlarged elevator was used to lift the limo and FDR to street level for his visits to NYC.
I wonder if any research was done to authenicate this railcar to the Presidential Train that FDR had used during the war years. It is quite possible that this railcar could have traveled over the CNJ!

According to dutchrailnut "http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... ht=waldorf

"its a 1944 troop sleeper converted to express boxcar It has been in GCT since about 1950, first under Waldorf Astoria as silverware storage car later given to railroad for storage of computer paper, now its used as office ..."

So the NG crew took a few liberties with that "mystery car". Never, ever a part of FDR's train consists AFAIK.

If you catch the New York episode of the History Channel's Cities of the Underground, the show takes you under the Waldorf-Astoria for a look at the hotel's "secret train station." FDR's armored rail car was left there after his death and it has the marking of "MNCX 002 (MW)" on it. The show also goes far below Grand Central Terminal and shows the secret electrical distribution station called M42 which is actually several times larger than the Grand Central concourse above. Railroad buffs should track down the episode because a good chunk of the show is dedicated to exploring these two spots.

A prime example of how a legend becomes truth by repeating it enough. And why not, since the trutrh is so prosaic compared with the legend?
