Have noticed the NS terminal just outside Painted Post, NY on my trips to Watkins Glen using US15. What kind of operations are supported from here. I generally see anywhere from 8 to 12 units laying over near the yard office.

This yard is NS' Gang Mills Yard which handles interchange traffic with the Wellsville & Corning (ex-NYC line southward) and LA&L's Bath & Hammondsport (ex-DL&W mainline northward). NS also operates the ex-NYC branch to interchange with the Finger Lakes Rwy near Seneca Lake.

Nine years a similar question was asked on the Trainorders website that led to many well-illustrated responses: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,909607

And here's a more contemporary thread that discusses the interchange RR situation out of the yard: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/r ... ?2,2505938

I think these are the NS locals that operate out of Gang Mills:
- H05 GANG MILLS - ADDISON, NY TURN
- H06 GANG MILLS - GENEVA TURN FINGER LAKES RWY INTERCHANGE
- H10 GANG MILLS - ELMIRA TURN (Note there are also a few locals out of Elmira that run to Owego, Binghamton, and Sayre/Ithaca)
- Hxx GANG MILLS - Painted Post for interchange with the Bath & Hammondsport RR

Besides the interchange work, at least two dailies run between Gang Mills and Bison Yard in Buffalo on the Southern Tier. Additionally, several trains run daily in each direction between Bison and Allentown or Mechanicville and will pick up traffic in the yard. If you are headed to the race track, NS also has the Baker Street Yard to the right of Rte. 414 as you head north out of Corning.
