It will include a 2.5-km tunnel in downtown Ottawa with three stations, because of how congested the streets have gotten there.
Outside of downtown, the line will run in the Ottawa Transitway from Campus to Blair in the east and from LeBreton to Tunney's Pasture in the west, the more central parts of the Transitway system.
The Rideau Transit Group consortium has been selected as preferred bidder to design, build, finance and maintain the Confederation Line, a 12·5 km light rail route with 13 stations in Ottawa.It should open by 2018.

The city will enter into a formal agreement with RTG to design, build and maintain the line from Tunney’s Pasture to Blair Station. Construction is expected to begin in late February with the widening of Highway 417 between Nicholas Street and 417/174 split. Two additional lanes are being added for express bus service while the transit way is closed for conversion to light rail.The existing busway and O-Train lines: OC Transpo - Transitway Stations
