Ottawa selects Confederation Line light rail consortium - Railway Gazette

The Rideau Transit Group consortium has been selected as preferred bidder to design, build, finance and maintain the Confederation Line, a 12·5 km light rail route with 13 stations in Ottawa.

It should open by 2018.

The city will enter into a formal agreement with RTG to design, build and maintain the line from Tunney’s Pasture to Blair Station. Construction is expected to begin in late February with the widening of Highway 417 between Nicholas Street and 417/174 split. Two additional lanes are being added for express bus service while the transit way is closed for conversion to light rail.

It will include a 2.5-km tunnel in downtown Ottawa with three stations, because of how congested the streets have gotten there.

Outside of downtown, the line will run in the Ottawa Transitway from Campus to Blair in the east and from LeBreton to Tunney's Pasture in the west, the more central parts of the Transitway system.

O-Train is the system's official name. The existing line is now called the Trillium Line, and the new line is the Confederacy line. The Trillium Line is diesel, and the Confederacy Line will be electric.

The Confederacy Line will take over parts of the existing busways, and the remaining parts will connect to it.

The word is “Confederation”...... the process by which the British Colonies were united into the Dominion of Canada.......and is used extensively in Canada in naming. i.e: Confederation Bridge, Confederation Centre of the Arts, Confederation Square, MV Confederation (ferry) etc

“Confederacy”....is a US term I believe for the Southern States in the Civil War.

Oops. I concede that that is a typo on my part. It's the breakaway Southern states that are the Confederacy.

The consortium building Ottawa’s light rail transit (LRT) Confederation Line says it will finish construction work in the first quarter of 2019, and expects to turn the project over to the city by March 31.

Much of the delay can be traced to the development of a sinkhole on Rideau Street in June 2016. Tunneling in wet, sandy soil led to a collapse that ruptured a water main and flooded the Rideau Street station. It took 3,000 cubic metres of concrete to fill the hole and stabilize the tunnel enough that construction could resume, according to the Ottawa Citizen newspaper.

It will go eastward, westward, and southward from the existing and under-construction lines.

I looked at some of OC Transpo's pages on its extensions and I found that they were redone. One must now look in Stage 2 Light Rail Transit Project | City of Ottawa

All three parts are under construction.

The East Line extension is being built in the median of Hwy. 174 from Blair station to Trim Road. Some of its stations are at Transitway stations, like Trim. It should start revenue service in 2024.

The West Line extension is being built from Tunney's Pasture station to Lincoln Fields, where it will split into a westward and a southward branch. The westward branch goes to Moodie and the southward branch to Baseline. Some of its stations are at Transitway stations, like Lincoln Fields, Moodie, and Baseline, and Transitway lines continue from both branches. It should start revenue service in 2025.

The site has some pages on the West Line's two tunnels, all cut-and-cover, unlike the downtown tunnel, done with a tunnel boring machine. One of them goes between Dominion, a little west of Tunney's Pasture, to Lincoln Fields. The other one of them is a short one just east of Queensview, on the westward branch just west of Lincoln Fields.

The Trillium Line extension includes Gladstone infill station just south of where it meets the east-west line at Bayview, and also South Keys station, where it will split into a westward and a southward branch. The westward branch goes southwestward to Ottawa's airport, and the southward branch southward then westward to Limebank. It should start revenue service in 2022.

The Transitway is Ottawa's busway lines for its bus rapid transit. The light-rail lines are for replacing its more central eastern and western parts.

From the looks of it, the Bank Street Tunnel will be the Purple-Line route between Parliament and Billings Bridge stations.
