I was looking at the center tracks between those 2 stations and it sure looks like that track is from ther LIRR era. 1 track is ballast/dirt covered and the other track has what looks like LIRR 3rd rail insulators and looks really old and the track is in really bad shape. Is this track from the LIRR abandonment?

It was never going to see much use for subway service, what would be the point in pulling it up and replacing it since all they needed were the outside tracks. the only got around to doing anything with the center tracks when Howard Beach was rebuilt for the Airtrain and the northbound local had a tempoaray platform built on top of it, requiring the northbound express be used.
