For instance, intra-MTA proposals or MTA-wide issues, which may involve both Metro-North Railroad (MNRR) and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Other intra-agency examples: through running such as the now discontinued MNRR-NJT Meadowlands special. Topics which only concern one operating agency should remain in their respective forums.

JFK AirTrain effectively free to ride as Port Authority bungles OMNY rollout

The JFK AirTrain is free to ride — at least some of the time — a top Port Authority official said on Tuesday.

But savvy transit riders said they’ve been able skirt the fare for the pricey people mover since October, when the agency installed OMNY tap-to-pay readers at a select number of the line's turnstiles in Jamaica and Howard Beach. The agency bungled the installation of the tech, enabling people to stroll through those entry points without paying the $8.50 fare.

During a news conference, Port Authority Chief Operating Officer Jim Heitmann claimed the gates are actually left open on purpose during busy hours to prevent crowding.

Yeah this has nothing to do with OMNY and has been an open secret for some time. Because of how unreliable the MetroCard readers (not OMNY) were and the backups that created – as well as the employees needing to constantly open up the machines to pull out jammed cards that were eaten and never spit out – they just open the gates from LIRR to AirTrain when trains arrive.

Exiting the station they don't do this and if you show up early ahead of the arriving train they don't do it either.

Oh and go to Japan. They keep their fare gates open all the time too, but somehow no one feels entitled to beat the fare and just pays. Crazy concept. They even have enough money to run the trains as a result.
