Maybe somebody on the New York Central forum has specifics on the original boxcars used. I don't know if they were built in the 1940's, or rebuilt then from even older cars.

The transfer cabooses were built at East Rochester car shops starting somewhere about 1966, and continuing after the Penn Central merger. While the basic configuration stayed the same, there were actually several changes through the production years.
