I have no idea where this post should be, but I would like to see old photos preferably the 1940's and 50's of Union Pacific 844, 3985 and SP 4449. I did see one photo of the 3985 from 1956 and one photo of the 4449 from the 1960's, but does anyone have more? I particularly am seeking 844 since I have not seen any yet.

Thank you!

In the 1940s and 50s, each of them was just a typical member of their respective classes and aside from their number looked just like their sister engines. 844 looked like any other FEF-3, 4449 like any other GS-4 and 3985 like any other 4664-4. There are historic photos around the net of some of the other engines of each group. A lot have been published in various books as well. From 1962 to 1989, 844 was numbered 8444 to avoid a conflict with GP30 diesel 844, so look for pictures of UP 8444 and you should find some. 3985 and 4449 were retired in the late 50s and didn't run until they were each restored; 4449 in 1975 and 3985 in 1981. There are some links to photos of 844 and other FEF-3s at http://www.steamlocomotive.com/northern/up.shtml and to photos of 4449 and other Daylights at http://www.steamlocomotive.com/northern/sp.shtml. Also, try http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/up/up-eng.html and scrolling down until you get to the steam locomotives. There are also pictures of 4449 from the 80s on and some 50s pictures of other SP 4-8-4s at http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/sp/sp-steam.html.

You need to go to the Union Pacific Historical Society website and look at their library.

In 1978, RH Kindig did a 64pp paperback on UP 844. There are several photos of her from active service.
Union Pacific 8444
Kindig, R.H.
Denver. Obenchain Pub. 1978. 64 pages

As far as SP 4449 goes, remember she quietly rusted in a Portland OR park until she was resurrected for the Bicentennial American Freedom Train. She slept for the better part of 20 years from the mid-50s to the early 70s.

I don't have any "old" photos, but I do have a few of just the 4449 (forgive the purple tint, I was using an old monitor when I photoshopped these).
