The Southern Railway of Vancouver Island; operators of the former Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway have picked up a freight customer that CP chased to trucks about 15 years ago. A utility pole-yard in Courtenay located a few miles south of the station is shipping about 5 loads of poles per week going off the island. Trains will be running once or twice a week up to Courtenay to service the pole-yard, most likely after the dayliner is south of Parksville heading back to Victoria.
This is the first regular freight movement to Courtenay since the ICG Propane outlet closed in the summer of 2001. The pole-yard is also the only customer to be moving goods off the island, all the other customers on the railway receive their product from the mainland and send empties back.
