EAST RUTHERFORD - An ambitious plan to transform industrial sites on the borough's western edge into public green space and residential development took three steps forward this week.
The borough announced Tuesday that it has made progress on plans to convert unused railroad tracks on the East Rutherford-Rutherford border into a bike path and to incorporate the 1.5-acre Silver Streak property along the Passaic River into a park.
The Borough Council also authorized Borough Attorney Peter Melchionne to acquire three parcels of the Star-Glo property on Carlton Avenue.
The plans are "part of an overall plan to upgrade remnants of the industrial period here in East Rutherford," Mayor James Cassella said in a phone interview on Wednesday. "Our plan has been to rehabilitate the areas to create some open space, as much as we can afford. This is big."
Norfolk Southern, a Virginia-based railroad company, agreed last week to lease the tracks to the borough, Melchionne said. The terms of the lease haven't been finalized, but the borough would pay a nominal fee and retain use of the land indefinitely, he said.
