I'm railfannin through Philadelphia and I heard of three or four yartds outside the city around Norristown area. I was wondering if anyone can help me out with directions? I went to the yard by sesame place and the yard on the schuylkill, they were nice, not a big selection, but workers were friendly and accomadating. Any help would be appreciated!

Norristown...Abrams yard is across the river, just north
of Norristown. Ex-Reading, Now NS. GP-38's and widecab GE's.

Not very exciting. I've never had a problem, but I've heard of
others being chased out.

Greenwich yard, south philadelphia. Formerly the"big" yard
for Phila., PRR and B&O.

Now CSX and CP. You can get pix of the CP from public roads,
but it is backlit during the day. All else is burried deep in the
yard, and not accessible. Not much there anyway.

Eastside yard, ex B&O, along the schuykill river, city side below
south street. Bad neighborhood, and the CSX cops patrol alot.
Probably the most power and variety in the Phila area, but it's
a get in and get out area. The cops may leave you alone if you
don't walk across any tracks. The CSX and the City of Philadelphia
have been having a big fight over residents of the city walking
across the tracks to get to a city park, so the area is particularly
sensitive. I used to have a friend who worked RG tower there,
so I knew how to drive in to where the employees parked. But that
wa years ago.

Pavonia Yard, Camden NJ..just acrooss the river..See if you can
get in touch with Chuchubob (Bob Vogel), who seems to be able
to take pix here without any problem. Ex-PRSL yard. Not a lot of
powwer, but some variety. There have been BNSF and UP units
here recently.

Sorry I can't give you directions to these other places, but with
a $5.00 map, you can find how to get to them. That's what I did.

----You can go down the road to Valley Forge park and go to the back and park by the fence/tracks. This way, if they are switching the yard and a train is coming, they will not block your view.

------in the same area that you get the CP power you can also get the CSX power when they come in with a train or a mother/slug (remote) set switching the yard. This is mix freight only for CSX. The Intermodel is at the other end and will not be able to get to for pictures.

------Pavonia is in just as good of an area as East Side.

There is also Frankford Junction in the Port Richmond section of the city. The power out of there can range in the form of GP38-2-SW1500-SW1001-GP15-1 with 2 caboose. This is all local work on the neighborhood and along the NEC. Sometimes they ask you to leave and sometimes they do not. All of the trains going in and out of South Jersey must go through here. This includes NJT AC trains.

There is also Woodburn yard for CSX along the Septa R3 line. No place to really get in and see power but you can sit at the Septa Woodburn station or Langhorn station and see them in and out of the yard. This is the route for CSX in and out of NY. They also have a small yard in Lansdale by the Septa station.

I hope this helps.

The yard you saw by sesame place was probably Woodbourne.

Eastside, Falls yard and Abrams are along the Schyukill.

South to North...

Eastside is on the east side of the river, between the Platt bridge
and Washington Ave. It is adjacent to the "South Philadelphia"
part of the City.

Falls yard is just north of the Route 1 bridge, on the west side of
the river. It is located between I-76 and the River. Not much power
there...the crews that you might see there come down from Midvale
yard or Wayne Jct.

Abrams is north of the Rte 202 bridge, on the west side of the river,
north of Norristown.

I frequently photograph Pavonia Yard and Engine House, but I don't enter Conrail property.
