Built in 1950 by the Pullman Company as a 52 seat long distance coach #1624 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Retired by the C&O and sold into commuter service and operated in both Pittsburgh, PA & New Haven, CT. Purchased by Norfolk Southern and rebuilt for steam excursion service behind Norfolk & Western #611.

Anyone know anything about this car? $204k and it's all yours.

When Shore Line East service started in 1990, it operated with equipment from the defunct PATrain Pittsburgh area commuter service. This included the two F-7s, 6690 and 6691. Other diesels were acquired from Guilford including two GP-38s, ex-MEC 253 and 257 and ex-MEC 471. All diesels got the McGinnis colors. At some point during the early/mid 1990s, ConnDOT had ordered Bombardier cars (no center door) and replaced the PATrain cars with those. Shortly later, the former SPV-2000s, demotored, also went into SLE service. Eventually, the Bombardier cars went to Metro North when the present VRE cars came. Sometime around then, the SPV2000s were retired.

Getting back to the PATrain, the original cars were stored in New Haven, then made it to the Adirondack Scenic, then were purchased by NS for their use and overhauled. Judging by the listings on Ozark Mtn, there is still at least one that was not overhauled and retains its faded "white with a red letterboard stripe" CCR livery.

As an odd aside, these were actually the only EMD hood units to wear that version of the McGinnis scheme. The New Haven-era GP-9's had dark grey (almost black) hoods with a red cab and a red/white NH on the side of the long hood.

The McGinnis-era NYNH&H livery for hood units was actually much closer to the new CTrail scheme rolled out for the Hartford Line-- mostly black/red.
