Yes the crews running the foliage train get paid. Train crews, unlike management DO NOT volunteer their time.

-if there are no plans this year for a big open house at Croton, how about some smaller railfan specials to NYP and New Haven, with a shop tour included. These would involve specific limited hours at the shop, a small enough group to handle, a chartered and self-paid train ride. A far less costly thing to do, which would largely cover its own costs, and still be a good will opportunity for Metro North and CDOT.
-perhaps the Department for Clever Things To Do would consider this.
-too bad about all the little kids, including those from all the railroad families. They really enjoyed the Open Houses.

You just don't get it ?? when MNCR says "no open house " what do you think that means.

With recent things involving matters such as the collapse of the ceiling at 181st Street, small things such as the Open House may be no longer! Right now with funding, and other matters, I can see why such things as Excursions/Open Houses (unnecessary costs) would not occur!

The open house has been canceled not due to lack of funding but because of the ongoing work at Harmon yard.

Actually MNCR gave both construction and cost as reason, but maybe they forgot to consult you ?

What's with the antagonistic response Dutch? What have I done to make your life such a living hell? Ease off, I didn't even respond to any of your posts in this thread, so what reason is there to attack my post?

If cost wasn't a factor would they still be having an open house at Harmon yard this year? I think not. If cost is the underlying factor than there never should have, nor will there ever be again an open house, since when was the last time MNR was not in the red to legitimize such an expense? Neither was finance mentioned as a reason in an official response from a MNR official as linked to in the very first post of the thread. Unless you propose such a response is fabricated.

I think Dutch needs a a breath of fresh air.

I would guess the construction factor outweighs the others mentioned. Even reporting to work in Harmon is a circus act with the numerous contractors moving around. Just walking from the parking lot to the T&E building is an adventure. Safety would be compromised having any kind of tour in the state the yard is in right now.

Be cool, R.O.S.!!! Very uncharacteristic of you to get all touchy!! :-D

You are right that construction is one of the factors, but also the budget and finances are the other. Why do you think MNR also dropped participation in the APTA Rodeo as well a few years back?? It's all about the Bennies, or lack thereof!! Screw the Open House!! I am pissed they dropped being in the Rodeo!! Now that was a fun affair to be a part of. I hear even NYCT has backed out of the Rodeo for now. I shall see how true that is though.

I'm about to cancel this thread. Folks, we're upset there's no Open House this year, but life goes on... let's look forward to the future.
