EAST RUTHERFORD - An ambitious plan to transform industrial sites on the borough's western edge into public green space and residential development took three steps forward this week. The borough announced Tuesday that it has made progress on plans to convert unused railroad tracks on the East Rutherford-Rutherford border into a bike path and to incorporate the 1.5-acre Silver Streak property along the Passaic River into a park.

Doubtful; the trail will cut through an area that is primarily industrial.

The borough is in the final stages of negotiating a bike trail that will be built on unused railroad tracks, a project that has been in the works for at least two years.

At a Borough Council meeting Tuesday, Tiffany A. Bohlin, a consultant who has been securing grant money for the project, reported that the borough is near to closing a deal with the owners of the tracks.

The roadblock has been that the owner, Norfolk Southern, a Virginia-based freight railroad company, needs to agree to lease the tracks - which lie on the East Rutherford-Rutherford border - to the borough.

"It's been a long, drawn-out process," said Peter Melchionne, borough attorney. "The real problem is getting them to give up the rights to the rail line."

Melchionne is reviewing the contract, which will be sent back to Norfolk Southern for final review.

Initial note: please advise if this is the sixth street embankment and I'll merge the threads. However, it doesn't appear to be.

Rail Removal along 'Highline' Remains a Mystery

Norfolk Southern Corp. railroad officials said they will be looking into rail lines that have been cut out and taken along its property on what is now an unofficial walking trail that runs adjacent to Erie Avenue from the Passaic River underneath the Maple Street bridge.

The rails, that once carried trains to Passaic through Rutherford and East Rutherford to Jersey City are no longer in use and are dead lines. East Rutherford and Rutherford officials for years have thought the rails and the path could be made into a rails-to-trails park, but little movement was made. Last year one Rutherfordian took it upon himself to clear the path along the rails using only a machete, saw and trash bags to clear and clean up the area and created at 2.5 mile walking path that hundreds of residents now use and call the "Highline of Rutherford." Rutherford and East Rutherford officials were expected to revive a rails-to-trails committee.

Not the same as the Sixth Street Embankment, Sarge.

I would imagine that the "Jersey City" destination mentioned in the fair use quote would have been the Erie's terminal, not the Pennsy's Harismus Cove Yard which is where the Sixth Street Embankment ended.
